Off Season Developments
The biggest change has been the further development of our youth program.
Santa Monica’s youth program has been steadily growing since its inception in 2003.
During that first year the program had between 75-100 regular participants.
This year head coach, Stuart Krohn, has developed the Inner City Rugby League (ICRL).
A spin-off from the Inner City Education Foundation (ICEF), which operates charter schools in the Los Angeles community.
The ICRL, which has 8 school based teams, has helped the club’s youth programs swell to over 300 participants.
Many of our Super League players spend countless hours a week developing the next generation of rugby players.
Krohn just returned from a week in Hong Kong with ten, female ICRL All-Stars.
The team was 7-1 on it’s trip overall, and amazed rugby fans throughout the Hong Kong area with their athleticism, size, and skill.
This is the fourth overseas trip that Krohn has taken with players from ICEF schools (his third to Hong Kong and the fourth was to New Zealand.)
These trips provide students with opportunities to see the world that they may not have had otherwise.
The “Deuce” as it is affectionately known is the new home of Santa Monica Rugby.
The new grounds at Webster Middle School, in West Los Angeles, are green, plush, and large enough to hold two full size pitches with plenty of room for spectators and vendors; for 7’s or 10’s events there is room for up to four fields.
The “Deuce” is home to the ICRL which hosts weekly matches throughout the season.
Twice during this preseason the Los Angeles area has had heavy rains throughout the week and the games went ahead as scheduled; in both instances the fields held up wonderfully with nary a muddy jersey following the game.
Outlook For 2008
Santa Monica club looks to make the playoffs this season after a failing to make the knockout round last year.
The team will again be lead from the front.
This year however our backs are much more experienced than last season which should provide more stability when the going gets tough.
As was the case last we expect Belmont Shore and OMBAC to be strong.
Any team that wants to compete for a Super League title will most likely have to defeat both of those teams in order to finish at the top of the table.
